So as I delve deeper and deeper into Mac territory, I find myself stumbling upon new programs and other neat tidbits of technology which have heretofore been invisible to me; its like finding a technological paradise.
This is not to say that Windows doesn’t offer a robust set of tools and programs, but just that Mac offers a set of tools which are unique and capable of perhaps just a bit more in the arena of the handling of media and related files.
One such application is FLOCK, billed as the new social web browser. Flock available at www.flock.com, can support Mac OS, Windows and Linux operating systems – so most of the OS landscape is covered; a smart move by the “flockers”, as I’ve dubbed them.
After using FLOCK (for Mac OS X) just once, I’m already getting a sense of how useful this program will be. The application integrates browsing, social networking, RSS feeds, webmail, blogging and a host of other things I’ve yet to explore. It certainly is refreshing to have all of these utilities or resources clustering in one seemingly stable application. During the setup process, you are asked if you want FLOCK to inherit or import setting from your default browser, whether you say yes or no is entirely up to you; I said yes. Once Flock opened, I had access to all of my Safari bookmarks just as if I was working in that application. On top of this were all the Flock goodness.
The developers indicate that Flock is based on Firefox. Unlike some browsers that need the core application to function (as in a shell environment); I did not need to install Firefox on my Mac in order to use Flock; this was a refreshing change from using other programs on a Windows machine that required Internet Explorer to be present in order to function.
Flock comes with a Yahoo! search tool embedded. I need to see if I can change that to be a Google search, but that’s minor. One note is that the developer is reporting a conflict with the Google Toolbar and Firefox because of how the toolbar looks for some Firefox components. Hopefully a fix will be in the offering from Google in the not so distant future. Enjoy.
